Happy Xmas (War Is Over)

今年の元日は東京の自宅でおせちを食べたり酒を飲んだりしてゆっくり過ごしました。
夜は専らラジオを聞いていたのですが、好きな音楽番組でジョン・レノンの有名な「Happy Xmas (War Is Over)」がかかりました。
あれ？正月早々に何でクリスマスの曲がかかるんだ。と疑問に感じたのですが、番組パーソナリティの人がこの曲はクリスマスソングの定番ですが、実は新年を祝うための曲でもあるので選びましたと言っていて、その意表をついた選曲の見事さにとっても感心したのでした。
クリスマスと正月
ごく個人的な感慨を言わせてもらえば、こんなにも別文化、別宗教の一大イベントが近接していることに今までちょっと戸惑いを隠せないふしがありました。日本人にとって一年うちで１月１日ほど祝祭的な日はなく、キリスト教徒にとってはクリスマス程大切な日はないでしょう。僕の中で何となくクリスマスと正月はケンカしていたのですが、この「Happy Xmas (War Is Over)」を聞いて、時間の節目のなかでみんなの幸せや平和を祈るということが互いの宗教や文化を超えて分かち合える価値観なんじゃないかと感じて、目から、もとい耳から鱗が落ちたのでした。
「Happy Xmas (War Is Over)」の歌詞は僕の中高合わせて６年間の英語学習をもって鑑賞するのにうってつけのテキストで、ほとんど初めて英語圏の人のメッセージを英語で感じることができました。ジョン・レノンとオノ・ヨーコは自分たちの子どもこの曲をプレゼントしたのだと知るにつけ重ねて深い思いをいだいた元日の夜でした。
